Designer
Neil Murray is Associate Director and Designer at Northern Stage. Since 1992 his directing/designing credits with the company include "Great Expectations", " Kaput", "Cinzano and Smirnova's Birthday", "Pandora's Box" (with Emma Rice), "The Tiger's Bride", "The Threepenny Opera", "Carmen" , "They Shoot Horses Don't They?", "Therese Raquin". "The Swan", and numerous Christmas shows including, "Beauty and the Beast", "The Snow Queen", "Grimm Tales" and the "The Little Prince".
He has also designed most of the companies other work including, "A Clockwork Orange", "1984", "Wings of Desire", "Animal Farm", "Blood Wedding", "The Ballroom of Romance", "Romeo and Juliet", "Twelfth Night" , "Edmund", "Not I", "The Dumb Waiter", "A Christmas Carol"and "Homage to Catalonia" (co production with West Yorkshire Playhouse , Teatre Romea Barcelona and MC Bobigny '93 Paris).
He continues to work with other companies when time allows. Recent work includes designs for "1001 Nights Now" and "Wings of Desire" for Betty Nansen Theatre ,Copenhagen ; "The Princess and the Goblin" , "Laurel and Hardy" , "Mrs Warren's Profession"and "Vanity Fair" for Royal Lyceum,Edinburgh , "Tutti Frutti" for National Theatre Scotland, Last year, he realised Tilda Swinton and John Byrne's installation, "Belsayland" which formed part of "Picture House" at Belsay Hall. Most recently he designed "Brief Encounter" for Kneehigh at Cinema Haymarket,London.
His work is presented in the design books, Make Space, Time Space and Collaborators. His design fore Homage to Catalonia was selected for inclusion in the UK National Exhibition at the Prague Quadrennial of Scenography 2007 which is now exhibited at the Victoria and Albert Museum.
He has just directed an adaptation of Angela Carter's "The Bloody Chamber" for Northern Stage and is currently designing the UK tour of "Brief Encounter" for Kneehigh , "Mary Rose" and "Copenhagen" for Royal Lyceum,Edinburgh and "Hansel and Gretel" for Northern Stage.
