Building on the success of last year’s Story Republic residency at the Exchange in Penzance, they are back for a three week residency from 30 July – 16 August. With a glorious art installation in the Engine Room, The Story Republic is an ingenious, immersive exploration for all the family into the world of work and trades through stories, art, song and games.
Each day there will be a writer in residence to create new stories and poems, such as Annamaria Murphy, Rebecca Gregson and Mac Dunlop along with Story Republicans to guide visitors through the realms of art and story.
There are a host of bookable workshops for children and adults. Two evening events celebrating creative writing: The Alphabet Soup – an evening of work by young writers and filmmakers, and Trading Tales with Cornish writers. All information is on www.thestoryrepublic.co.uk/events
Drop in and hear a poem or song but also look out for the teams of Story Republicans around town in shops, parks and libraries.
There is also a story trail in five businesses around Penzance: Archie Browns, Buttons and Bows, Morrab Library, Books and The Cobblers Last. Each one has a story by a Penwith writer to collect. Gather them all and be entered into a prize draw at the Exchange.
Writer and illustrator Catherine Hyde will be in residence on Thursday 31 July from 11-3. She has created rich and atmospheric illustrations for The Princess Blankets by Carol Ann Duffy and Little Evie in the Wild by Jackie Morris www.catherinehyde.co.uk
The Story Republic is open daily, except Sundays, from 10-5. Admission is free though donations are encouraged.
