Bethany tells us about her experience volunteering for Kneehigh at the Asylum
"The summer I spent as a Kneehigh volunteer rates as one of the best yet. Arriving at the site in bright sunshine (and occasionally rain!), catching up with the other front of house team members, before putting on the legendary Asylum apron and diving into the world of Kneehigh.
The best thing about being a front of house volunteer is that you are the first port of call for the audience. It’s great to have people telling you how they have seen Kneehigh for 30 years and how much they are looking forward to the show, or how this is the third time they’ve been to the Asylum this year because they love it so much. Your job as a volunteer is to make sure that everything runs smoothly for the audience and lots of people come up and mention how great the Kneehigh volunteers are.
It is brilliant fun but also a great way to go behind the scenes learn how a venue works, as well as looking good on your CV. You do lots of different jobs including merchandise selling, ushering in the auditorium, and working in the car park, and it’s quite busy so there isn’t a chance to be bored. Volunteering at the Asylum was also a way for me to meet artists working in Cornwall. Through meeting someone whilst I was volunteering I became in intern for Cscape, a Kneehigh associate company.
Mostly I loved being part of the Kneehigh team, dancing to the Kneehigh band after the shift had finished, and generally sharing in the mad Asylum fun! I’m already looking forward to putting my apron back on this year."
