Kneehigh were thrilled to receive two awards last night at the Cornwall Tourism Awards, including the award for Outstanding Contribution to Tourism
The Cornish theatre company won Gold for tourism activity, sport and experience of the year for the Kneehigh Asylum which opened in 2010 and is the only purpose-built theatre tent of its kind. The company were praised for their world-class storytelling and for providing a unique theatrical experience for visitors and Cornish residents alike.
Simon Tregoning, Chair of the Visit Cornwall partnership later announced that Kneehigh had also won the outstanding contribution to tourism award for the enthusiasm for Cornwall that they share in their touring theatre performances
Simon spoke about Cornwall’s reputation as leaders in the full range of arts from visual to performance, saying “We are now as well known for our creativity as our pasties and cream teas.”
He called Kneehigh “ambassadors for Cornwall” and went on to say that “wherever [Kneehigh] go they demonstrate imagination, innovation and artistry, drawing inspiration from Cornwall’s culture, people, landscape and history but making it relevant to the here and now – and in turn enthuse their audiences to come and discover Cornwall for themselves.”
Emma Rice, Joint Artistic Director of Kneehigh said, “We are thrilled, touched, surprised and proud beyond measure to have won the Outstanding Contribution to Tourism Award. As anyone who works in Cornwall over the summer knows, there are times; knee-deep in mud, cold, wet and battered that we wonder if it is all worth it. This award and the warmth of the industry and our audience tells us, "Yes"! Happy days, indeed. Heartfelt thanks from all of us at kneehigh.”
Hosted at The Headland in Newquay and presented by VisitCornwall, the Cornwall Tourism Awards span 16 categories to recognise excellence across the local travel industry and bring together leading businesses who play a pioneering role in maintaining and enhancing Cornwall’s quality offering.
All of the Cornwall Tourism Awards winners will now go on to represent Cornwall in the South West Tourism Excellence Awards and ultimately the National Excellence Awards which take place next year.
