Songs from Calais

Songs from Calais

A selection of songs by Anna Maria Murphy, inspired by her time at the Jungle camp in Calais.

Dover To Calais.

A see through lie
To get through the border,
A holiday in Calais.

Having never been there,
Only a fool
Would tell this story.

Fences.

Over the water,
Crisp Winter skies
And
A Fence to keep us in
And  them out.

To keep us out
And them in.

To keep us
Them
The other
The sister
The brother
The mother
The other
The them
The us
The all
The other,
Out.

To keep
The leap
The jump
The run
The hope
From happening.

It follows
The road
Like a long growl,
A barbed scowl
A  rabid dog on the prowl.

Jungle.

In the “Three Idiots” café,
Awesome serves us
Sweet Chai
Under the flicker of lights
And Bollywood.

We have toured Syria
Sudan
Chad
Afghanistan
Eritrea.

A borderless country
Of huddled men
And shacks
That sell
Anything
You
Could
Possibly want.

Egg and Been.
Chiken Sope
Been Sope
Chippeds, Egges and Been
Rice and Beens.

And always,
Sweet
Sweet
Chai.

Jaffa the Mechanical Biscuit.

Jaffa the Mechanical Biscuit
Will mend your Bicycle.
He’ll swap you a part,
Heal your tyre’s
Oil your brakes
Break your heart,
Put a brake on your soul,
Weld your spokes,
Put a spoke
In anything
You
Ever
Thought.
