What? When? Where?

What is Asylum?

Asylum is Kneehigh's Summer theatre festival. This year it's all about breaking the rules with style, with pop-up shows and surprise acts peppering our season of world-class theatre and epic live music. Find out more about this year's programme here.

When is Asylum 2018?

This year's Asylum takes place from 2 August until 22 September. Opening the 2018 festival is the roof-raising satire musical Ubu Karaoke, which runs from 2 until 25 August. From 7 August, Kneehigh will be staging Quentin Blake's The Dancing Frog in the afternoons, also until 25 August. September marks the return of Fup: A Modern Fable, which will run from 7 until 22 September.

Where is Asylum?

We are delighted to pitch our Asylum tent on a brand new site within The Lost Gardens of Heligan. The address is: The Lost Gardens of Heligan, Pentewan, St.Austell, Cornwall, PL26 6EN. If you are driving to the site, please be aware that Sat Nav devices tend to take you along the most direct route and often down a network of single track Cornish lanes, which can be unsuitable for larger vehicles and those not used to driving such roads. We therefore advise that whichever your direction of approach, travelling via St Austell and following the brown tourist signs will be the easiest way to find the Gardens. More information about getting there, including via public transport, can be found on the Lost Gardens of Heligan website.

What is the venue like?

Is there free parking?

Free onsite parking is available at the Lost Gardens of Heligan. Please drive towards the main entrance and follow the instructions of our wonderful parking attendants.

Will there be assigned seating?

Seating at the Asylum will be unreserved. For Fup and The Dancing Frog, this will be bench seating, during Ubu Karaoke, you will be up on your feet and free to wander as the show happens around you. Seats and perches will be available on a first come, first served basis and a limited number of seats will be available to be reserved in advance for guests with access needs and their companions.

Can I visit the Lost Gardens of Heligan at the same time as seeing the show?

If you have a ticket for the show only, you'll be pleased to hear that you can still experience the Lost Gardens. You can access the Gardens from 6pm for evening performances and from 2.30pm for matinees.

You can also book Garden + Show tickets, which allow you to enjoy the Lost Gardens all day on the day of the booked performance. Arrive any time from 10am and simply present your ticket.

Is there food and drink?

If you are joining us for a matinee, you will have full access to the Gardens' food and drink offer. Enjoy vegetables from the garden, meat reared on the estate and bread and cakes from Heligan's own bakery.

After 6pm, a limited hot food offering will be available outside the Heligan tearooms. Inside the Gardens, the legendary Asylum bar will be open before and during the show. Just a note; it is a cash only site, so please make sure you have some with you as there are no onsite cash machines.

Can I bring my dog?

Dogs are allowed in the Gardens, but please be aware that dogs will not be allowed on the Asylum site and cannot be left unattended in the Gardens.

What happens in case of bad weather?

Let's face it, however beautiful, we can't always count on bright and shiny weather here in Cornwall. Luckily the Asylum performance tent is up for all kinds of weather and sufficient cover will be around to keep you dry outside of it. Please be aware though that you will have to walk a short distance from the entrance of the Gardens to the performance tent and some of the paths may get a bit muddy.

What is "Pass It On"?

We know that the arts can be transformative and we think everyone should be able to enjoy the magic of theatre. You may not know it but Cornwall is one of the poorest places in the UK, which makes it difficult for everyone to be part of the Kneehigh community. Through the Pass It On programme, we want to give 300 children and adults that wouldn't normally have the opportunity the chance to experience the Asylum.

We need your help to do this! A donation of as little as £5 can help us give someone an unforgettable experience. Find out more here.

Access information

Is the site accessible?

There's no denying it, the Asylum is pitched in a field. But we have made it as easy as posisble for everyone to enjoy the Asylum experience. The new site is within the Gardens themselves and is a 10 minute stroll on well-maintained and level pathways. Wheelchairs can also be rented onsite. You can find more information on Heligan's access facilities on their website.

If you have any particular access requirements, please do let us know by calling 01872 267910 or email office@kneehigh.co.uk.

Are there any BSL Interpreted / Captioned / Audio Described performances available?

A BSL interpreted performance for Fup is scheduled on the 11th of September.
