Journey to the Centre of the Earth
Picture this: a rainy Saturday afternoon in the mid 70's. A father and son sit glued to the television, watching a movie. In those days there were only three channels, so it was pot-luck as to whether you got a movie, a bad movie or a good bad movie.... you know what I mean; The Valley of Gwangi, Warlords of Atlantis or The Land that Time Forgot, in fact anything starring Doug Maclure.
This show is based on the novel by Jules Verne, but at its heart lies the world of B-movies. Journey to the Centre of the Earth is a fabulous book, brimming with scientific facts and as much information on rocks and minerals as you could ever want. Unfortunately, at times, it is also quite dull. On the other hand, B-movies from the 60's had no scientific or educational value whatsoever, but they were really exciting and really silly. So, mix the two together and what have you got? I've no idea, but I bet old Jules is turning in his grave.
But remember, theatre is not the movies; it's even better! It's live. In theatre the actors are life size and they are right in front of you. The monsters are not CGI but C&G (cardboard and glue) and the special effects budget is as big as your imagination will allow.
So join us if you will, on a journey of excitement and adventure, a journey beyond belief, a Journey to the Centre of the Earth! This show is dedicated to Doug Maclure, wherever he maybe, and to my dad, who loved good bad movies.
Craig Johnson.
