A Tristan & Yseult walk around Golant, near Fowey

On a very sunny bank holiday Monday, we went to St Sampson's Church in Golant, and King Mark's Castle - both places intertwined with the legend of Tristan & Yseult

Anna Maria Murphy, trusty map in hand, took us to St Sampson's Church where the gate is beautifully carved to commemorate the church's involvement in the story. Last year the church had a flower festival on the theme of Tristan & Yseult, and there was a book of photographs in the church documenting the festival. The views from the churchyard were spectacular - you could see why it was such a good look-out point.

After hearing about the story of Saint Sampson (who saved the village of Golant from a serpent, no less!) from two ladies getting ready for this year's flower festival, we went on further up the hill to the remains of King Mark's castle, now inhabited by some very friendly calves. At 225 feet across, this is an impressive place, and walking around what would have been the ramparts of the King of Cornwall's stronghold was an amazing feeling

Tristan's Stone, the other stop on our visit, has been moved already from its original spot near the ruined castle to a more prominent spot next to the road down to Fowey. At the moment, its backdrop is a sign that says "Wainhomes Development Coming Soon"...

Watch out for an article on the Good Cornwall Guide about the walk, coming soon
